Now part of the permanent collection at the Palm Springs Art Museum, the story of Albert Frey’s “Aluminaire House,” and its significance in the history of architecture is quite remarkable. If you had never seen a modern house — and most Americans had not — it probably looked like a set for a science fiction movie. Even today, it looks “like it’s from another planet,” said Palm Springs Art Museum CEO Adam Lerner. After years of negotiations and fine-tuning the logistics, the Foundation donated Aluminaire House to the Palm Springs Art Museum in 2020, which subsequently raised $2.6 million to cover the cost of its rebuilding and future care. Mr. Heuermann went on to college at New York Institute of Technology on Long Island to study architectural technology. One of the few neighbors Mr. Heuermann spoke to was Etienne de Villiers, 68, whose immaculately kept house next door stood in keen contrast with Mr. Heuermann’s. Mr. de Villiers said he had only passing conversations with Mr. Heuermann along with a few minor conflicts, like the time he had to tell Mr. Heuermann to stop leering at his wife over the backyard fence while she was sunbathing. Mr. de Villiers watched as Mr. Heuermann seemed to be raising his children to be as isolated as he had been, in the same rundown off-limits house. “He just didn’t want any part of it, he didn’t want any part of sports,” Mr. DeMicoli said.

The wedding drew students from India, Pakistan, Nepal and other South Asian regions, as well as those who are not South Asian. Mock wedding events have existed in various forms for decades. In Canada, a musical group called Betta Boyz hosted a large mock Nigerian wedding at a Calgary banquet hall in July 2022. Bollywood films, reality television shows like “Indian Matchmaking” and magazine spreads featuring “ultrarich weddings” all contribute to wedding-related fervor. “There is this entire media industry around images of glamorous, luxurious, extravagant, highly indulgent weddings,” she said.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre delivered the commencement speech to Rice University's undergraduate class of 2023 on May 6. Throughout the 22-minute address, Jean-Pierre had one central message, which she repeated 12 times: "Hope is action." "My parents worked hard jobs, and even harder hours, to make sure my siblings and I got the education we needed," she said. It was a significant moment for Jean-Pierre and especially for her father. Still, Jean-Pierre points to voting as one of the key actions an individual can take to change their community.
